One note: that time I was upgrading from v2.16.4.Final to v3.9.2.Final, an issue emerged (when running quarkus upgrade):
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Unsupported class file major version 65

I needed to upgrade Gradle from v7.5 to v8.6 since v7.5 did not support Java 21 (default in Quarkus 3.9.2).

Two things:

• did the update actually updated to Java 21? It should have updated to Java 17, not 21.
• we should probably update the Gradle Wrapper in the upgrade. I will have a look at doing it for 3.8/3.9.

Not sure it will help, but I would recommend to upgrade to 3.8 (if you want a LTS) or 3.9 directly. As we might have fixed this problem in recent Quarkus already.

If not, please try to provide a reproducer so that we can have a look.

looks like this is related to my IDE, though... I tried to start the app from IntelliJ, and as seen from stacktrace, it starts running in io.quarkus.bootstrap.IDELauncherImpl.launch. The app starts normally when I run it from the terminal.

Definitely something is going on with the maven plugin and the class maven.settings.crypto.DefaultSettingsDecrypter.

After debugging a bit, I see that my classpath has two plexus-sec-dispatcher jars for different versions: 1.4 and 2.0. The stacktrace error matches with the code in version 1.4, so there's a dependency in my project that is pulling old version (it turned out to be sonar-maven-plugin). Adding an exclusion to plexus-sec-dispatcher to the sonar-maven-plugin solved the issue.
