Releases don't show up in Explore Activity feed in the GitHub mobile app (Android)

Since a month or so, the releases and discussions from my starred repo's don't show up in my Explore Activity feed. I checked the filters. Did something change, or is there something wrong? I only get the activities from the people I follow.

It just stopped working for me too on mobile.. But after I updated the filters inside the homepage dashboard (in the browser), it worked again.

Hi! Thanks for your help. I find there seems to be an auto-close recently by Github for "Include events from starred repositories." After checking it, it works again.

I'm having the same issue even though my filters are set correctly, not a single release is in my feed. I don't see updates from people I follow either. That's been going on for the last few days. Both mobile and web are affected in my case.

I've also been having this issue for literal months. The only filters I have on is "Releases" and "Include events from starred repositories" and it's showing me nothing even though there have been several releases of my starred repos in the last few hours. The feed seems to randomly decide multiple times and day to start and stop working. Typically when it actually works I take a moment to scroll through a few pages so their loaded in case it just breaks again.

Usually I can fix this by toggling a random combination of filters off and on, although that doesn't even always fix it. That's been the case for a few days now - the page is just literally showing nothing. This is true on both the website and mobile app. If I toggle other filters on, I do see their results, but never releases.

Same issue. It has been occurring for several months, but in the last few days, it got way more often and is harder to get around (by randomly toggling filters). Created a bug report. I'm on desktop btw.

Update: I took the following steps to fix the issue. I opened GitHub in a browser, then Home > Filter > checked Include events from starred repositories. This change was then reflected in the app.

I started using this method from the beginning of this problem. About a month ago it stopped working at all. So, the most important function of the home page disappeared.
And this is not the first or second time this has happened.
A day ago this method worked again, so at least I can see new releases. But is it for long?
I wish the GitHub team to find a decent solution to this problem.

This issue still persists on my device (iOS 18). It started by removing random items from the tabs. Later the card order reversed (making it go from oldest to newest) and all Releases were removed. Then the tab suddenly reversed back. Now I can't see any Releases and no new items are being added to the Activity tab even though I'm pretty sure that there should be new items appearing.

i have also the same problem on the mobile app on the iphone. At a certain point a few weeks ago suddenly i see only followers. Unselected filters on mobile and reselected them and for a few minutes that fixed the issue. But after a few minutes it went back to showing only the followers. Now tried to reset filter settings in the browser and got no changes. So still doesnt work for me.

This issue has been plaguing me long enough that I threw together some thoughts on what I'm guessing could be happening.

Please poke holes in this theory if you have evidence to the contrary! I'm not claiming to be correct. I would just like this problem fixed 😄

Theory

The releases show up in the activity feed during times of low overall site load for GitHub.

I noticed the server that handles GET https://github.com/conduit/for_you_feed
returns HTML not JSON. I think it will give up trying to retrieve releases from your starred repos if that request takes too long.

I assume that as part of building the HTML response for the for-you feed, the server will make requests to retrieve the following:

• Announcements
• Releases
• Sponsors
• Stars
• Repositories
• Repository activity
• Follows
• Recommendations

Note

Of course any of the above elements can be filtered out by the user.

It seems like this server will silently fail to retrieve the releases list, but return the rest of the elements that make up the for-you feed.

I'm guessing a lot of us experiencing this issue have 100+ starred repos. As a result, searching for new releases in your starred repos will take longer than a user who only has 20 starred repos.

Supporting Evidence

• Releases show up in my feed most commonly after 19:00 (UTC-7) on weekdays
• Releases show up in my feed most of the time on weekends
  • My activity feed showed releases from my starred repos on 12/28 00:57 (UTC-7) and 12/29 13:00 (UTC-7) when I checked this past weekend.
  • It is BROKEN again as of 12/30 12:32 (UTC-7)

TL/DR

Users with a large number of starred repos will have the API call to retrieve new releases silently time out, so no releases are shown in the activity feed.

I had similar suspicions since a while and personally I have over 600 starred repos. Though I expect Github to be able to handle such numbers, otherwise I don't see the point of the star system except for simple bookmarking.
Very rarely my feed fixes itself, but even in such cases it feels like some entries might be missing.
