According to the Nixpkgs quick start guide, it requires that this program is ready for general use. The Github repo claims it is alpha-quality software. Unfortunately, Distant is not ready to be added to the Nixpkgs repository.

Despite that, I submitted a PR upstream for a Nix flake. To install it to your user environment, run

nix profile install

in the base of the repository. I hope that helps.
